How to Choose Carton Sealing Tape

Carton sealing tape holds the box closed through every handling point between your dock and the delivery address. Failures usually show up as open flaps, not torn cardboard, so tape grade and application method matter as much as the carton itself.

  • Width: wider tape spreads the load across the flap and is easier to apply straight by hand.
  • Adhesive: acrylic tape is the general purpose choice and holds up in storage, hot melt grabs faster on recycled board and in cold areas.
  • Application: a dispenser keeps tension even and cuts waste compared with tearing by hand.
  • Pattern: a single centre strip suits light cartons, while the H pattern across the centre seam and both end seams suits heavy or long distance cartons.
  • Printed and coloured tape: useful for fragile handling, priority orders, or separating one customer's freight on the dock.

If cartons are arriving open, change the pattern before changing the tape. Most reopened cartons were sealed with one pass on a box that needed three.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the H taping method? + -
You run one strip along the centre seam and one strip across each end seam, so the tape forms an H. It stops the flaps lifting on heavy cartons and on long freight legs.
Do I need a tape dispenser? + -
For more than a few cartons a day, yes. A dispenser keeps even tension, cuts cleanly, and uses noticeably less tape per carton than hand tearing.
Can I get tape printed with our business name? + -
Custom printed tape is not a stocked line. Contact us with your quantity and artwork and we will tell you what is possible and the lead time.
