Using Silica Gel and Desiccants in Storage and Transit

Desiccants absorb moisture inside a sealed space. They are the cheapest protection available for goods that suffer from humidity: paper and cardboard packaging, textiles, leather goods, tools and anything with exposed metal or electronics.

• Inside the packaging: place packets in the carton, case or bag with the goods, not on the outside.
• Sealed spaces only: a desiccant works in an enclosed volume. In an open shelf or an unsealed carton it saturates quickly with little benefit.
• Transit: containers and long sea freight legs produce condensation as temperature changes, so pack desiccants for the journey, not just for storage.
• Quantity: more packets are needed for larger volumes and for goods stored longer. Start conservative, inspect on arrival, then adjust.
• Indicator packs: colour change types show when the packet is saturated and needs replacing.

A simple check: open a carton from the back of the store room after a humid week. If the packaging feels soft or the metal parts are dull, the goods around it need desiccants added at packing rather than at dispatch.
